With Sheriff Carmine Marceno officially declining to run for Congress, the CD-19 race just shifted in a major way.Here is the new political reality:

The only two candidates with significant, long-standing roots in Southwest Florida are Mike Pedersen and Jim Schwartzel.

That’s it.

In a district where voters consistently say local ties matter — where business ownership, community involvement, hurricane recovery, and long-term presence carry weight — this development narrows the field in a meaningful way.

Marceno Decides to Stay Sheriff

Marceno announced he will not run to replace Byron Donalds, who is running for Governor.

After months of speculation, Marceno said he seriously considered the race, especially given his strong support for President Donald Trump. He even described serving alongside Trump in Washington as “a dream come true.”

But ultimately, Marceno said he believes he can best serve Southwest Florida by remaining Sheriff of Lee County.

He pointed to low crime rates and said the community is “safer than we have ever been,” making clear his focus remains on law and order here at home — not on a move to Capitol Hill.

What This Means for the Primary

Even with a past FBI investigation and questions raised about spending practices, Marceno would have been a formidable candidate. He has enormous name ID in Lee County and a loyal regional following. In a crowded Republican primary, that alone could have reshaped the race.

Now that he’s out, the contrast sharpens.

Several candidates in the field are recent arrivals to Southwest Florida. Others previously ran for office in states like Illinois and New York. Two are former Members of Congress who were not re-elected in their home states.

That leaves a central question for Republican primary voters in CD-19:

Does this district want a candidate with deep Southwest Florida roots — or another political transplant?

Byron Donalds’ seat is wide open.
