Come November, Collier County voters won’t just be deciding on candidates. They’ll also decide whether to raise the county’s tourist development tax from 5% to 6% on hotels, vacation rentals, and other short-term stays.

Supporters make a straightforward case: locals don’t directly pay this tax—visitors do. That extra penny could generate nearly $10 million a year to help complete the Paradise Coast Sports Complex in East Naples.

On paper, that sounds like an easy sell.

But there’s one detail voters shouldn’t overlook.

The Paradise Coast Sports Complex has already cost taxpayers more than $114 million, far above its original projected price tag of roughly $60 million to $80 million.

To be fair, the complex has become a popular destination. It hosts youth sports tournaments, concerts, festivals, FC Naples matches, and community events. County leaders say adding more playing fields and a large indoor fieldhouse would attract even more tournaments, hotel bookings, and year-round tourism.

Those are legitimate goals.

Still, this is government asking for additional revenue after a project has already experienced significant cost growth. That’s a fair reason for voters to ask tough questions before approving another funding source.

The proposed tax would not increase property taxes, and it would apply only to short-term accommodations rented for six months or less. If voters approve it, the increase would take effect on January 1, 2027.

So this election isn’t simply about whether tourists should help pay for tourism infrastructure.

It’s about accountability.

Has Collier County demonstrated that it can bring this project across the finish line without another surprise price tag? Are taxpayers—and voters—confident the additional revenue will be managed responsibly?

Visitors may pay the extra penny.

But only Collier County voters can decide whether county government has earned it.
